Sometimes it can get confusing as to which approach to pick first. The truth is that you can make good money online using a variety of different approaches from using affiliate marketing, adsense, eBay or creating your own product or service and marketing that. Here are some tips to help you succeed on your journey to making more money from the internet.

1.Set Proper Goals:

This is a very important step and it is one that very few new internet marketers actually do. Most people jump onto the internet desperate to make money without realizing that they will face many challenges along the way. Setting proper goals will help to keep you focused and on track no matter what challenges you face along the way.

The first step is to decide your real reasons as to why you want to earn income online. Maybe you just want a little extra income to pay off a car payment. Perhaps you are more ambitious and are sick and tired of working at a job and want more freedom. Take your time and get in touch with the deepest reasons why you want the money. This will be the fuel that will keep you going even in darkest of times.

Once you have clear powerful reasons you must write these down on a piece of paper. There is great power in writing things down and something almost magical happens that makes the accomplishment of what you write down a thousand times more likely than if you just chose to try to remember it instead.

Next you need to decide on how much you want to earn 6 months, 1 year and 2 years from now. You must give yourself time to accomplish your goals so be patient. Also be realistic in the amounts you choose so a good example could be $500 a month 6 months from now and then $2000 a month 1 year from now and $5000 a month 2 years down the road. Do not look for overnight get rich quick schemes. Again you must write these income targets down ideally on the same paper that has the reasons also.

Now you need to review these reasons and income targets at least once a day. It does not need to take much time, simply glance at it and remind yourself of where you are going financially and believe it. You can even carry this paper with you so it almost becomes a part of you. Reviewing these things regularly will keep your mind focused and it will also activate the part of your brain called the reticular activating system that will work for you day and night to automatically find ways to make these things a reality. Just by creating and following through on proper goals like this you are already 90 percent of the way to success.

2.Pick A Proven Strategy:

The best way to select a proven strategy is simply to use common sense. Do not fall for get rich quick schemes because they are usually a waste of time. Some proven strategies to investigate and learn more about could be affiliate marketing, adsense, eBay marketing or if you have an idea for a product or service you could do that too.

Some proven ways to market and get visitors to your site are pay per click advertising, article marketing and also learn about ethical search engine optimization so you can also get free traffic to your site from the search engines. Each of these areas will require further investigation on your part so read as many free articles as you can about them as many of these articles are written by top internet marketing professionals. Visit an article directory like Ezinearticles and read their articles on internet marketing as they can offer great free advice.

3.Stick With It:

Anything worthwhile in life will require a commitment on your part and you will more than likely experience many obstacles along the way. At the start it is best to pick one proven method like affiliate marketing and stick with that. Learn all you can about it and become a real expert at it. That is how you will gain the specialized knowledge you need to become a super affiliate. Do not jump from one method to the next like going from affiliate marketing to eBay marketing just because things seem a little tough. Stick with it and in time you will discover a way succeed and make more money online.

Once again, i hope this helps and good luck with your blogging

Today, however, Google is pushing the feature to beta status and turning it on for all signed-in English Googlers.

You may recall that Google Social Search is a standard search results page add-on that displays socially relevant content from people in your online social circle, as determined by your Google Profile.

With the beta release, Google’s () also integrating social search into Google Image searches, which means you can scroll down to view pictures matching your query that contacts from your circle — friends and friends of friends — have shared online.

With the beta release Google is also introducing new UI elements to tie the social search experience together. So two additional links will appear next to the “Results from your social circle” heading, with “My social circle” and “My social content” taking you to pages that display your social circle in address book format and the content for your own results, respectively. The experience seems focused on information over design, so don’t expect any frills here.

We think the beta rollout to all English searchers is more significant than the initial labs feature, as it exposes the contextual search results to a mainstream search audience. While it’s officially a beta product today, the Google Social Search rollout will occur over the next few days. If you don’t have Social Search already, you can expect to start seeing the social results fairly soon.

1. You own the rights to the book (your question implies that you do, and have not sold the rights to another entity).

2. You must supply an ISBN (International Standard Book Number). You can purchase an ISBN for $125 by using the application at http://www.selfpublishing.com/images/Single-ISBN-application.pdf. Or, you can get a discount by purchasing a block of 10 or more ISBNs through the Web site ISBN.org.

3. You must open an account with Amazon’s eBook subsidiary, MobiPocket, and use their software to convert your file into their proprietary format.

It goes without saying that if you’re publishing a book, you’re operating a business — and you need to report income from that business to the IRS and pay the required taxes.

I’ll provide more background on getting started with MobiPocket below. But first, let me ask this: Why are you limiting yourself to an eBook? Your question implies that you want to get your book to market quickly and/or limit your cost and risk. However, you can simultaneously publish a paperback edition of your book for modest setup costs and time investment.

The vast majority of book buyers still prefer physical books, so if you produce only an eBook edition, you’re limiting your sales unnecessarily. For startup costs of around $200, you can also offer a paperback edition of your book on Amazon using print-on-demand technology, and Amazon will handle the shipping and customer service. I’d estimate that your paperback sales would outnumber your eBook sales by at least 20 to 1.

To get your paperback on the market, I would suggest that you open an account with Lightning Source Inc., which will print your book and supply copies to Amazon and other online retailers as the orders come in. And, if demand for your book proves strong, your book will also be available for stocking at brick and mortar chains like Borders and Barnes & Noble through Lightning Source. If sales of your book really take off, you can lower your printing costs by switching from print-on-demand technology to offset printing.

Now, some additional detail on MobiPocket:

In 2006 Amazon stopped selling Microsoft Reader and Adobe-format books to focus on selling e-books through its wholly owned subsidiary, MobiPocket. The free MobiPocket Reader software allows users of PDA handheld computers to view e-books in the Mobipocket format.

MobiPocket books will also be sold through other online retailers. The promise, especially for self-published authors, is the potential to reach millions more readers at low cost.

To join MobiPocket, register at its publisher portal, eBookBase:
www.Mobipocket.com/eBookBase/en/homepage/apply.asp?Type=Publisher

Then register, print and sign Mobipocket’s publisher agreement:
www.Mobipocket.com/eBookBase/en/Homepage/pub_agreement.asp

Fax in the agreement. After Amazon receives your signed publisher agreement, the Mobipocket team will notify you via e-mail of your account activation. Then you can log into eBookBase to start uploading and selling your e-books.

To convert your books to the Mobipocket format, you can download a free copy of the necessary software, Mobipocket Creator, Publisher Edition. You’ll be able to upload directly from the Mobipocket Creator software or using the eBookBase Web interface:

www.Mobipocket.com/eBookBase/en/Homepage/default.asp

For more information, join the mailing list of Amazon’s Digital Text Team by sending an e-mail to DigitalBooks@Amazon.com.

Lastly, one caveat: Amazon is still in the process of switching over to MobiPocket. So it may be a while before your eBook is actually available for purchase on Amazon.

In addition to MobiPocket, Amazon offers another eBook option to its customers: “Amazon Upgrade” provides buyers with immediate online access and searching of physical books they’ve already purchased. There is no downloadable file, but users can print a certain number of pages. To upgrade their books, readers pay about 10 percent to 20 percent of the book’s original price, and Amazon splits the revenue with publishers.

Amazon Upgrade is designed to appeal to buyers who want to receive a physical copy of the book, but are also willing to pay a bit extra for immediate online access and searching. Buyers view the book online through the Amazon Reader, the same interface used for Search Inside the Book. Amazon users can view which previous purchases are available for Upgrade by browsing here:

www.Amazon.com/gp/sitb/purchasing/booklist

Amazon hopes Upgrade will appeal to publishers concerned that online access to books might cannibalize sales of physical books, cutting publisher revenue. With Upgrade, any purchases result in added revenue for publishers, since readers have already purchased the hard copy.

To be eligible to purchase upgrades, readers must buy the book directly from Amazon. Upgrades aren’t available for books bought used or new from third-party Amazon vendors.

Buildings caught fire, major highway bridges collapsed and debris lay in the streets across large swathes of central Chile.

A 15-storey building collapsed in Concepcion, the closest major city to the epicenter, and overturned cars lay scattered below a fallen overpass in the capital Santiago. Telephone and power lines went down, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and loss of life.

Chilean President-elect Sebastian Pinera said at least 147 people had died in the 8.8-magnitude quake, which struck at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. EST), sending many people rushing from their beds and onto the streets in fear.

Tsunami warnings were posted around the Pacific, including the U.S. state of Hawaii, Japan and Russia.

One emergency official said Chile’s death toll was unlikely to increase dramatically, but it was one of the 10 biggest quakes recorded since 1900 and dealt a blow to the economic infrastructure in the world’s No. 1 copper producer and one of Latin America’s most developed and stable countries.

“This will be a major blow to the country’s infrastructure; there has been major damage to roads, airports, which are now suspended, ports and also in housing,” Pinera told reporters.

The quake halted operations at two major mines and President Michelle Bachelet said a huge wave hit the Juan Fernandez islands, an archipelago where Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was marooned in the 18th century, inspiring the novel Robinson Crusoe.

“There was a series of waves that got bigger and bigger, which gave people time to save themselves,” pilot Fernando Avaria told TVN television by telephone from the main island. Three people were killed and four missing there, he said.

Bachelet said residents were evacuated from coastal areas of Chile’s remote Easter Island, a popular tourist destination in the Pacific famous for its towering Moai stone statues.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles.

The capital Santiago, about 200 miles north of the epicenter, was also badly hit. The international airport was closed for at least 24 hours as the quake destroyed passenger walkways and shook glass out of doors and windows.

“I thought I’d blown a tire … but then I saw the highway moving like it was a piece of paper and I realized it was something much worse,” said one man who was forced to abandon his car on a wrecked highway overpass.

Chile’s Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, suspended operations at its El Teniente and Andina mines, but reported no major damage and said it expected the mines to be up and running in the “coming hours.”

Production was halted at the Los Bronces and El Soldado copper mines, owned by Anglo American Plc, but Chile’s biggest copper mine, Escondida, was operating normally.

Chile produces about 34 percent of world supply of copper, which is used in electronics, cars and refrigerators.

TSUNAMI

Unusually big waves battered Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, where residents were moved to higher ground as a precaution.

“Chile probably got the brunt force of the tsunami already. So probably the worst has already happened in Chile,” said Victor Sardina, geophysicist at the warning center.

“The tsunami was pretty big too. We reported some places around 8 feet. And it’s quite possible it would be higher in other areas,” he added.

An earthquake of magnitude 8 or over can cause “tremendous damage,” the USGS says. The January 12 quake that devastated Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince was measured as magnitude 7.0.

Local television showed a building in flames in Concepcion, one of Chile’s largest cities with around 670,000 inhabitants. Some residents looted pharmacies and a collapsed grains silo, hauling off bags of wheat, television images showed.

Broken glass and chunks of concrete and brick were strewn across roads and several strong aftershocks rattled jittery residents in the hours after the initial quake.

In the moments after the quake, people streamed onto the streets of the Chilean capital hugging each other and crying.

“My house is completely destroyed, everything fell over … it has been totally destroyed. Me and my wife huddled in a corner and after hours they rescued us,” said one elderly man in central Santiago.

There were blackouts in parts of Santiago. Emergency officials said buildings in the historic quarters of two southern cities, mainly made of adobe, had been badly damaged and local radio said three hospitals had partially collapsed.

The magnitude 9.5 earthquake of 1960, the largest earthquake worldwide in the last 200 years, spawned a tsunami that engulfed the Pacific Ocean. About 1,600 lives were lost in Chile and the tsunami took another 200 lives in Japan, Hawaii and the Philippines

In 1960, Chile was hit by a 9.5-magnitude earthquake, one of the biggest ever recorded. It devastated the city of Valdivia, killed 1,655 people, and sent a tsunami that battered Easter Island 2,300 miles off Chile’s Pacific coast and continued as far as Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines.

As new businesses enter into the process they must avoid five common mistakes.

One of the buzzwords for small business today is social networking. It seems that everyone is doing it and many do not know why, or how, to use it effectively. Most people have heard of Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter, and while these are three of the most popular, there are hundreds of social networking sites available.

When used correctly, social networking can be a very effective and inexpensive (even free) marketing method. Small business owners new to social networking can make many mistakes that ruin the results they had hoped to gain through this medium.

Here are five common mistakes that new people make and how to handle them:

Mistake #1: Having the wrong attitude Social networking is not about selling, it is about building relationships. By building relationships you create visibility and credibility. This is not the time to blatantly sell something because it will turn people off. Instead, go into this knowing that it takes time to build relationships. Be patient and allow people to get to know you. When people get to know you and are in need of what you offer, they will automatically come to you to fill the need.

Mistake #2: Missing an opportunity to network As you get to know people, opportunities will come up to network with larger networks. People will ask you to become part of their networks or ask you to be a friend. Consider every invitation wisely. Is it within your niche? Are you likely to find either customers or joint venture partners by accepting this invitation? A mentor of mine is fond of saying, Say yes to every opportunity to keep it open and available to you. Say no later, if the situation changes.

Mistake #3: Mismatched profiles and posts When others consider adding you as a friend or a networking buddy, they will review the information you have made available on your profile or posts. If they like what they see, they ll probably add you. If your profile is filled with games or content that would make your grandmother blush, potential connections may pass you by if they are not interested in those things. As another example, if all you tweet on Twitter is buy this , sign up for my… , others may not follow you, They don t want to be sold to all the time; they want to know who you are, make the connection, and then see what you have to offer.

Mistake #4: Not continuing conversations when people ask As you become more visible in social networking you will be engaged in conversations. Always look for ways to talk to people or give feedback. This increases your reputation for having the answers and your visibility and credibility will continue to build. If you ignore emails and direct contacts, you send the wrong impression of your integrity as a business person, and you may also lose what could have been a great customer.

Mistake #5: Focusing on counting heads instead of building relationships many people go to social networking sites to see how many people they can have on their list. Numbers do not mean anything in this medium if you are not building relationships. If you build your rapport with people, you will have a more solid foundation for your network. This foundation will eventually help you create loyal customers.

Social networking is an important aspect for small business as people continue to opt for busy lives. It is more cost effective and some experts even predict it will replace traditional networking and marketing methods eventually. If you become adept at building your networks, you will have the competitive edge over those who do not follow this networking opportunity, and your profits will grow.

The Adsense program is a big revenue generator for Google, too. The company earned some $2.7 billion in Adsense revenues last year. If you’re thinking of making money online here are some reasons why your first online business should be Google Adsense :

Google Adsense is FREE and EASY

You first need to apply to join the Adsense program via an online form. Once you’ve been accepted into the program, you will be given a snippet of code containing your unique ID to paste into your website to enable the ads to appear. It’s that simple to start making money with Adsense.

With Google Adsense Everybody can make money

With Google Adsense, it doesn’t matter if your website is big or small. The amount of money you make is generally proportional to the traffic that your website attracts. No site is too small to make money. Even if you could make an extra ten dollars a day (which is really very achievable) by just pasting a snippet of code into your web pages, I’d call that a great way to make money!

No worries about finding advertisers

Finding the right advertisers and the right place to advertise can be a tricky business for both publishers and advertisers.Google, by their sheer size is a magnet that attracts advertisers and publishers for all sorts of products and services. They become the broker between publishers and advertisers. All you need to do is concentrate on your website.

Great for beginners

The majority of newbies who try to make money on the Internet call it quits within twelve months, not because they want to, but because they get lost in the jungle of online money-making. This leads to frustration and disappointment and eventually, defeat. Google Adsense cuts a clear and simple path for everyone to follow – join the program, paste the code, improve your website content and get paid when people click on the ads.

Google is great

Google is on the cutting edge of search engine and pay-per-click technology. Even as Adsense became the spectacular success that it is today, Google never stopped developing and refining ways to help regular people with regular websites monetize their traffic. They have some of the best brains working for them.

Making money while you sleep

I can honestly say that I make money while I sleep. Round the clock, every click earns me anywhere from 5 cents to a couple of dollars. Since joining the Adsense program, my day starts off bright and cheery with a visit to my reports page that tells me how much I earned while sleeping!

Earnings grow with your website.

While Adsense does generate more income on certain types of websies than other less popular niche sites, the general consensus is that as long as you continue to build on your website’s popularity and add good, useful content, your Adsense income WILL continue to grow. More traffic logically equals more clicks and more money.

Small change for some, BIG money for others

Perhaps the ones who are reaping the greatest benefit from the Adsense program are the publishers from the developing world. While a US100 dollar check may not mean very much to a webmaster in New York, it can mean a couple months salary to someone in Africa. Stories abound in Adsense-related websites and forums of how this program has changed the lives of thousands of people. Many have been able to make a comfortable living solely on the income derived from the Adsense program.

Earning money with Google Adsense gives new website owners hope and a clear sense of direction. Even if you earn 50 cents a day at first, it opens your eyes to the possibilities that Google Adsense presents. It’s a straightforward way to make money compared to the often complex path of affiliate marketing. There’s every reason to believe that Google Adsense can only get bigger and better, so it makes perfect sense that every newcomer to online money making should give the Adsense program a try.

Why giving away your time and expertise can be great for your business.

Why giving away your time and expertise can be great for your business.

………. As business owners, we typically give gifts to staff, suppliers and, sometimes, customers (particular in the form of post-Christmas sales). However, maybe the concept of giving needs to be a year round activity. Before you think that I’m referring to giving to charity – and yes, I’m a big advocate of that too – I’m talking about taking advantage of the law of reciprocity. If you do this well, it could be great for your business.

I’ve been re-reading Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini. A professor of marketing and psychology, Cialdini writes about the rules of reciprocation and how pervasive it is in human culture. Cialdini is referring to the sense of obligation we have to reciprocate when someone has done us a favour.

After all, when you are invited to a dinner party, you often feel the need to return the invitation. If someone has been babysitting your kids one afternoon, you feel obliged to do the same thing in return.

Cialdini cites a number of stories which embody the rule of reciprocity in action. Like the university professor who experimented with the concept by sending Christmas cards to a bunch of random people he didn’t know. Cards poured back into his letterbox from many people he had never met. Or the study Cialdini did of Hare Krishnas who previously raised funds by dancing and chanting on city streets while begging for funds. The Hare Krishnas changed their approach to one of reciprocation – by giving an item like a flower or book to an unsuspecting donor – before asking for a donation in return. When they first adopted this approach, money poured in.

According to Cialdini, even though the Hare Krishnas said there was no obligation to give, most people felt compelled to do so as they were given something first. This occurred even though many ditched the flower or book in a nearby bin soon after.

So how can this work in your business?

Generosity of education and information
I often hear business owners worry about the fact that they are “giving away too much”. This can often happen in consulting or in service-based businesses where there is an element of education that’s necessary before a prospect is going to sign on the dotted line. In most cases, my opinion is to be generous with your information. Sure, there is always the chance the prospect may not sign up in the end, but if the rule of reciprocity takes effect, prospects are likely to do so in return for what you’ve already given them.

The key here is how you position your giving. You need to be generous with your information, yet be clear (in a classy, stylish way) that you are doing your prospect a favour. Because when people think you are doing them a favour, they are more likely to reciprocate. However, there is always the danger that prospects expect your advice/consulting as some kind of community service. It’s not. You’re not a charity. You don’t have to give away this information. But, in most cases, I think you should – as long as you are making it clear that this information (and your time) is valuable.

The “what” and the “why” – but not the “how”
If you are still concerned that you are giving away too much, then follow this simple rule. Tell people about the “what” and the “why” – but don’t go into detail about the “how”. Or only give part of the “how”. This way, you are still being generous with your information without giving away the farm.

How should you do this?
This is going to depend on how much time you have and the price point of the product/service you ultimately want to sell. If you want your customer to outlay $3000, you probably need to “give away” more of your time or expertise compared to if you want your customer to part with $300.

Remember that it doesn’t necessarily have to be a time-consuming exercise. There are cost-efficient ways to communicate and nurture a wide group of customers. For example, my business is the Sydney Writers’ Centre and I send a weekly email newsletter to subscribers/prospects full of information about writing tips, how to get published, how to improve business writing skills and more.

Some people have told me they think I am giving away too much information. I hear comments like: “If you keep including so much information in your newsletters, some people will never pay for your services or book into a course.” I find that the opposite is true. Many customers tell us that because they learn so much from our newsletters, they enrol in our courses because they think they’ll learn even more when they do pay.

It’s about building relationships
Also, don’t be perturbed if your customer doesn’t purchase straight away. If you lay the right groundwork, it will pay off in the end. Some of my customers have been on my database – and have received my newsletters for years before finally purchasing. Here, it’s not about the quick sale, it’s about building a relationship. One customer recently purchased for the first time after receiving newsletters for four years. She said: “We’ve never met before but I feel that I know you through your email newsletters.” (Of course, there’s a whole other article that I could write on the power of email newsletters – when done properly. But we’ll save that for another day!)

The bottom line is that customers have choice. If your competition is generous with information – and you are not – chances are that customers are going to go with the provider/supplier who has given them something of value in the first place. So it’s not just at Christmas that the spirit of giving. Adopt it as a year round approach – and watch the rule of reciprocity in action.

You may have the entrepreneurial drive to start your own business online but struggle with coming up with an idea for your site. Here are some proven tips to help choose an idea:

1. Make a huge list of topics that interest you and choose the area that you have the most passion. When you are passionate about a subject, it is more enjoyable to build and update your website. Additionally, your content will sound more personal and interesting when you write with enthusiasm. Many successful website owners claim it was there passion for the subject that made their site successful. Look for interests by considering your hobbies, job skills, topics of interest in newspapers, favorite television shows, products that you personally buy, new trends or fads, or anything else you find interesting.

2. Take a popular subject (that interests you) and come up with a unique twist that separates your site from the other sites. You could make tutorials, update visitors on the latest news on the subject, review new products, compare prices between existing products, have a forum, create a blog with your own unique perspective, write your own articles, and more.

3. Find a popular website and add something additional that makes the site even better. For example, the creator of Craigslist took the model of paid classified ads and made them free. The founder of Digg was a Slashdot user, but felt users should be able to approve submitted links instead of just editors. While visiting your favorite sites, try to think of features that would make that site better.

4. Think of something you’re good at and build a site based on it. If you’re funny, then you could create a humor site. If you are a good cook, then post videos of preparing specific meals. If you give good advice, then create an advice site on relationships, friendships, managing money, or whatever area you feel skilled. People are constantly looking for unique and fresh information on the web, which you may be able to offer them.

5. Develop your own product to sell. Maybe you’ve had a great idea for a new product and just haven’t taken any action yet. The web is a great place to market products to interested buyers. You could advertise your product, for example, using Google adwords or on other related sites on your subject. For ideas on products, one great place is to check out forums and see what problems people face in this area and then develop a solution.

6. Make a blog on yourself. Maybe you live an interesting lifestyle and think website visitors would find your life equally as interesting. If you’re not shy, then share your life experiences or inner thoughts. Blogs also allow visitors to comment on your posts so you may actually learn something from your blog as well.

7. Take a popular subject of interest and choose a niche. Having a focus on your site can help prevent feeling overwhelmed about what to write. A niche website can also stand out from general topic websites and result in targeted visitors who will be more interested in your content.

8. Have paper and a pen handy during the day to jot down ideas that come to mind. If you’re like me, I have actually come up with ideas in the past but soon forgot about them. These ideas can come to you while going about your day without even consciously trying to choose a topic. It’s best to write them down as soon as possible.

Try out these tips and you should be well on your way to building your new site!

Where there’s a desire for information, there is someone on the web who either has it or is willing to provide it. Sites host everything from personal interests to highly rated, peer reviewed academic articles intended for circulation among the intellectual elite. The web is the single greatest achievement in the field of human interaction and information sharing, putting a great part of the entire sum of human knowledge at the fingertips of anyone with a computer and a telecom connection, and it is ridiculously easy to get lost in the utter volume of the sites presented.

There are many tools out there for getting your content noticed. Social media networks, article directories, linking hubs, and user forums all present opportunities to advertise and build up interest in a site s content. Perhaps the most common tool in this arsenal of promotion is the discipline of link building. Link building is the promotion of your site to other sites that will then provide a link back to it. The theory basically asserts that when site A links to site B, a portion of site A s traffic will then look toward site B, hopefully leading to continued visits, promotion, and Link building is not simply about volume, however. In fact, it is much more a matter of quality and discernment than it is quantity of links. There are a number of mistakes to avoid, and a number of techniques that will help you get the most out of a proper link building campaign.

Choose Relevant Links

Ideally, link building is more than collecting as many links as possible from any indiscriminate source. People go to websites for very specific reasons; they go to Google to search, to YouTube for videos, to Half for great shopping bargains. They do not go to YouTube for complex technical articles or to Half for custom furniture commissions. If in our example site A focuses on fiction writing as a general craft, and site B does as well, this is a relevant link. People from site A will be interested in site B on at least some level, because they provide related content. However, if site B is a site pertaining to the art and craft of personal finance, site A s membership isn’t as likely to be interested. In fact, improperly chosen links can have a detrimental effect on a site s traffic. Savvy users dismiss a site that chooses irrelevant links.

This isn’t to say that every link has to be an exact match, content for content. Continuing the previous example, the fiction writing site may link to a fiction publishing site that offers agents interested in looking for new material. These are not identical services, but are definitely related, and the links are chosen for that reason.

Be Reciprocal

In the most basic sense, the idea of reciprocity is to return the favor by linking to sites that have linked to yours. This encourages cooperation, allows both sites to benefit from wider audiences, and is basically an example of common courtesy. However as mentioned before, not every link is relevant and people have vastly different reasons for linking to various sites. A blogger may link to a particular author or article they find outstanding. The author in question may be grateful, but their readership might not be interested in this other person s blog, for whatever reason. In this case, they are not (and indeed never are) obligated to return the favor. However, failing to return the link could be construed as impolite at least, and possibly lead to one of those internet reputations that cause headaches.

In such cases, there are ways to be reciprocal without returning a link. Suppose someone has taken the time to link you, as in the case above, but your site audience just isn t targeted to the site in question. Send a brief email to the site owner, thanking them for the link. This acknowledges the service they ve provided, leading to possible future communication. If you know another site that is relevant to your benefactor, consider offering to put them in touch, further cementing the opportunity to establish a relationship with someone who has provided you a service. The key is to be inventive, rather than to reflexively link and possibly end up off message.

Provide High Quality Content

This has been stressed many times, but it remains a vital truth. People are more likely to link to a site providing content that offers quality for every click, be it in terms of content or services. A well designed forum with a number of insightful posts, diverse discussion topics, and active moderation is more likely to attract visitors and links than a site using a basic, shoddy interface in which a number of spam bots make irrelevant sales pitches in poorly constructed English. Give your site a chance to get noticed and get promoted. Make it the very best site you can, promoting materials that people will want to link to when given the chance.

11:18AM “If you listen to the pundits, we’re going to price it under $1000, which is code for $999. When we set out to develop this, we had ambitious tech goals, but we had aggressive price goals.”

11:17AM “What should we price it at?”

11:17AM “And the new iBooks application. You can carry literally thousands of books around. And the iWork suite of apps with the best UI we’ve ever seen for something like this.”

11:17AM “WiFI plus 3G if you want it. So iPad. It’s phenomenal. Email is fantastic, best device for photos, great for music, great for video. It runs almost all of the 140k apps on the app store, as well as a whole new generation of apps.”

11:16AM “So we have a breakthrough deal in the US. We hope to have our international deals in the June / July timeframe. However, all of the iPad 3G models are unlocked, and they use the new GSM microSIMs.

11:15AM “So how do you turn this on and manage it? You can activate this right on the iPad. And there’s no contract — it’s prepaid.”

11:14AM “We have a breakthrough deal with AT&T.” Wow. Some serious sharp intakes of breath here.

11:14AM “We have an unlimited plan for just $29.99 a month.”

11:14AM “Now what does it cost for the data plans? Well in the US carriers charge about $60 a month. We have a real breakthrough. Two awesome plans for iPad owners. The first one gives you 250MB of data a month for $14.99.”

11:13AM “Now I’d like to talk about wireless networking. Every iPad has WiFi… but we’re also going to have models with 3G.”

11:12AM “Isn’t it great?” Some slight hesitation. “A few other things. I’d like to talk for a minute about iTunes. The iPad syncs over USB just like an iPhone or iPod.”

11:11AM “That’s iWork on the iPad.” And Steve is… back!

11:11AM And the iWork demo is done. “So what are we going to charge for applications like this? We’re gong to charge just $9.99 each.” He means $10 for Pages, $10 for Keynote… etc.

11:10AM It looks as though these new dropdowns menus are a major part of the iPad OS. Will be interesting to see how this translates to the iPhone and iPod touch. Is there going to be room? Or will they be left out entirely?

11:09AM Interesting. A data entry keyboard just for entering info into a spreadsheet. There are a number of different keyboard for specific tasks, also a date and time keyboard.

11:03AM We’ll say this — iWork looks really robust. Far more than an iPhone app. Lots of options, lots of ways to work with your data.

11:02AM They’ve really redone this interface. We don’t know about you, but using iWork wasn’t one of our fantasies when we thought about what an Apple tablet would be like. This is nice… but it’s iWork.

10:59AM “Could the tablet handle that? You betcha. But they required a new UI — here’s Phil Schiller to tell you about it.”

10:58AM “Now, something very exciting… iWork. A little over a year ago I asked the head of our team about creating iWork for the iPad. The reaction was… ‘ahhh they require a lot of horsepower’”

10:57AM “So iBooks again, a great reader, a great online bookstore. All in one really great app. We use the ePub format. We’re very excited about this.”

10:56AM The store is very similar to iTunes. Same modal pop-overs. Pricing doesn’t look too bad. The book page display is nice. You can turn pages slowly — really slick looking page animation.

10:54AM “It has a bookshelf. In addition there’s a button which is the store — we’ve created the new iBook Store. You can download right onto your iPad.”

10:53AM “Isn’t that awesome? These guys only had two weeks. So we’ve seen some really great apps. Let me show you another… one of our apps. That’s an ebook reader. Now Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this… we’re going to stand on their shoulders for this. Our new app is called iBooks.”

10:52AM Scott: “While we wait for those apps to come out, we can all run our existing apps… and that is the app story for the iPad.” And Steve is back.

10:50AM Chad Evans from MLB.com — “We were excited to build something for the iPad. We had to create a whole new experience for this display.”

10:49AM Finally, MLB.com…

10:49AM And that’s it for EA. Really?

10:49AM A handful of new touch controls. Graphics look smooth, fairly fast.

10:47AM Travis Boatman from EA is up. “When Apple invited us to come on site, we couldn’t have been more excited. But we wanted to check out this device’s performance as gamers.”

10:46AM This is very slick — probably the most impressive demo yet. A very sophisticated use of the screen real estate. Brushes for the iPad looks like you can go pretty deep. Available at product launch.

10:45AM “Today I’d like to show you how brushes looks on the iPad.” This is nice. Context menus for brush and color options. We’re loving these new pop-over menus. No more diving!

10:40AM “The iPad version of Nova ships later this year…” Interesting. Scott is back. “Next up, the New York Times.”

10:39AM Showing off their FPS Nova. “I can slide the d-pad on the screen…” You can set up your own controls. New gestures for interacting with games. This isn’t anything breathtaking just yet — fairly standard graphics (though nice), nothing new in terms of interaction.

10:37AM “We’re exciting about possibilities on this. So we invited some developers two weeks ago to see what they could create. We want to show you what they came up with. First, Gameloft.” Mark Hickey from Gameloft is up.

10:36AM “We’re going to feature iPad apps front and center for you.”

10:36AM “We think it’s going to be another gold rush for devs. And of course every iPad comes with the app store on it.”

10:36AM “We rewrote all of our apps for this display. the iPhone SDK supports development for this now… and we’re releasing it today.”

10:35AM “So all of the iPhone apps will run on this. In fact when you buy it, download all the apps you have right onto the iPad. Now if the developer spends some time modifying their app, they can take full advantage of this display.”

10:34AM Games look amazing. He’s playing an OpenGLS title right now and it looks super smooth.

10:34AM So far no word on multitasking, but we haven’t seen it. Jumps into and out of apps, nothing running concurrently.

10:33AM Gaming obviously will handle this better, but a text heavy app looks lonely or weirdly huge.

10:33AM “Let’s start with Facebook. It just works.” He’s showing off the non-pixel doubled version, a small app in the middle of the screen. It’s kind of silly looking. A lone app in the center of a black screen. The scaled up app looks silly as well, especially in Facebook.

10:32AM “We can also pixel double and run the apps full screen.”

10:31AM Can run all iPhone apps unmodified out of the box.

10:31AM “Morning. The app store has been a huge success. Already our customers have downloaded 3b apps.”

10:31AM “Now, let’s go back to software. We’ve seen some great built in apps. Let’s talk about third party. Let’s talk about the app store.” Scott Forstall is out!

10:30AM “What is the battery life like? We’ve been able to achieve 10 hours of battery life. I can take a flight from San Francisco to Tokyo and watch video the whole time. And it has over a month of standby time.”

10:29AM “It’s powered by our own silicon. The 1GHz Apple A4 chip. It screams.”

10:27AM Big cheers. “Watching it is nothing like getting it in your hands.”

10:27AM “So that is video on the iPad. It gives you an overview of what the iPad can do.”

10:24AM Steve is in Maps now. Zooming looks super fast — no idea what this chip is, but it has no trouble handling pretty graphically intense stuff. Everything looks polished — zero hiccup. “Now here’s street view…” Wow. Big applause for that. “Now let me show you video.”

10:22AM “Let me show you a few other things. The iTunes store is built right in. I can sample music, buy songs.” The interface has modals that pop over what you’re viewing to show you song / album info.

10:20AM Now we’re watching a photo slideshow… just like iPhoto, cute music and all.

10:20AM Places in the photo app, that is.

10:18AM “Next, photos… this is what photos looks like. I can look at everything as a list of photos. I can tap on it…” Flicks and gestures just like the iPhone.

10:18AM “Now if I want to send a message, I hit compose — up pops this gorgeous keyboard.” Steve is typing, it looks very responsive.

10:17AM Wow, nice email display — message list in a column on the left, full message on the right.

10:17AM “So that’s browsing the web. Let’s go to email.” Again, menus pop down from the top.

10:16AM We’re basically just watching Steve casually browse. This is odd.

10:16AM Now Steve is on Fandango… Now National Geographic. Switching to landscape. If you’re an iPhone owner this will seem very familiar.

10:14AM Slide to unlock screen just like the iPhone. “This is the lock screen — icons fly in. Let’s go right to the web…” Apple.com — Bookmarks drop down from a bunch of contextual menus up top.

10:12AM “Album, photos… you can look at all of them, flick through them, it’s a wonderful way to share. Calendar… months…” The interface really does look like an exploded iPhone.

10:12AM “Phenomenal for mail.” Wow, new drop downs in the mail interface… and a large onscreen QWERTY!

10:11AM “Way better than a laptop, way better then a phone. You can turn it any way you want. To see the whole page is phenomenal.”

10:11AM “So, gonna give you a little overview. It’s very thin — you can change the homescreen to whatever you want. What this device does is extraordinary. You can browse the web with it. It’s the best web experience you’ve ever had.”

10:10AM “Let me show it to you now.” Wow — looks like our leak!

10:10AM “We think we’ve got something that is better. And we call it the iPad.”

10:09AM “If there’s gonna be a third category, it has to be better at these tasks — otherwise it has no reason for being.”

10:09AM “What kind of tasks? Browsing the web. Doing email. Enjoying and sharing pics. Watching videos. Enjoying music. Playing games. Reading ebooks.”

10:08AM “SO all of us use laptops and smartphones… the question has arisen; is there room for something in the middle. We’ve wondered for years as well — in order to create that category, they have to be far better at doing some key tasks… better than the laptop, better than the smartphone.”

10:07AM “Let’s go back to 1991, when we first shipped our Powerbooks. The first with a TFT screen, the first with palm rests, and had an integrated pointing device. Just a few years ago in 2007 we reinvented the phone… and a few years later we got the iPhone 3GS.”

10:07AM “So let’s get to the main event.”

10:06AM “So those are the updates that we have today.”

10:06AM “And by revenue… it’s even bigger than Nokia.”

10:06AM “Now where do we get this revenue? iPods, iPhones, and Macs. What’s interesting is that iPods are mobile devices, the iPhone is, and most of our computers. We’re a mobile company. That’s what we do. How do we stack up against all the other companies that sell mobile devices? We’re the largest mobile device company in the world. Larger than Sony, bigger than Samsung….”

10:05AM “Lastly — we started Apple in 1976 — 34 years later we just ended our holiday quarter with 50.6b dollars of revenue…” He showed a pic of him and Woz!

10:04AM “Next update — the app store. We have over 140k apps, and a few weeks ago we announced a user downloaded 3b apps.”

10:03AM Now Steve is talking about the new Apple store in NYC. “Here it is on opening day. It’s so wonderful to put these stores in the neighborhoods with our customers.”

10:03AM “But first I have a few updates. A few weeks ago we sold our 250mth iPod. The second update is about our stores — we now have 284. It’s amazing. Last quarter we had 50m visitors.”

10:02AM “We want to kick of 2010 by introducing a magical and revolutionary product today… but first I have a few updates.”

10:01AM Steve is soaking it in. “Good morning and thank you all for coming.”

10:01AM And Steve is out! Huge applause… and a standing ovation from some audience members.

10:00AM The lights are going down… here we go!

10:00AM Verizon and Sprint 3G cards are your good, good buddies at an Apple event.

9:56AM “Please silence your phones… our program will begin shortly.” Oooh.

9:54AM Everyone is really all smiles here. Sure, the WiFi just went out, but generally everyone seems to be quite excited. Makes sense, gadgets and money will be flowing like sweet summer wine when this thing is all over. Right?

9:51AM The electric version of ‘Baby Let Me Follow You Down’ — in case you were wondering.

9:50AM So, more Dylan. We swear, if Bob Dylan shows up at this event, we’re going to seriously freak out. In a good way.

9:43AM The setup on stage is really interesting. There’s a chair with a table next to it… very unusual for an Apple event.

9:42AM Okay! We’re in our seats and there’s some Dylan playing on the sound system!

9:11AM Overall the mood is really jovial right now. It’s basically a party in the U.S.A.
